The tour follows the traditional path to Laguna Esmeralda. Once we have passed this stage, we take a path that borders the right side of the lagoon, advancing at a slow and controlled pace due to the fallen trees and the old inactive beaver dams that make the passage difficult. Leaving the vegetation limit, about 650 meters above sea level, we enter mountainous terrain with continuous slopes, where the real physical challenge begins. Our guide guides us along the most accessible and safest path.
As we advance, we face large blocks of unstable rock, until we reach a natural terrace with panoramic views of the Laguna Esmeralda and the Sorondo mountain range, where Mount Olivia and the neighboring mountain, known as the "Five Brothers". At this point, it is essential to find the best pass to ascend the glacier.
This section of the route is the most delicate, so our guide always carries safety equipment, such as ropes and carabiners, to guarantee a safe and careful ascent.
Suddenly, we find ourselves facing the majestic expanse of ice of the glacier, with the imposing Rhino towers watching over the landscape. We will appreciate this impressive view while we rest with a sandwich and a hot soup to regain strength before starting the return. Although the adventure is not over yet, we begin the descent cautiously, following the same path we took on the way up.
