The adventure begins by taking National Route No. 3 towards the entrance of Ushuaia. The imposing mountains Olivia and Cinco Hermanos guide us along the way. Already in the Tierra Mayor valley, we begin a 5 km trek (10 km round trip) towards Laguna Esmeralda.
The valleys through which we will walk are the result of erosion caused by enormous glaciers in past times, and today we can observe the imprint of those glaciers reflected in the color of the water.
After receiving instructions on the use of crampons and walking sticks, we entered an ancient subantarctic forest, which was once home to lumberjacks and is now the territory of beavers.
Upon arriving at the lagoon, which depending on the conditions may be frozen, we prepare to walk on the ice, an experience guided by an expert that will remain engraved in everyone's memory.
The dome offers us a warm refuge and the fire comforts us after the walk. A delicious mountain stew, a pleasant chat and a moment of camaraderie complete this experience. There will be no shortage of a comforting hot coffee while we contemplate the landscape before heading back, renewed with the energy of the south.
